THE MAY BLITZ 1941
1st MAY 1941
The start of the May Blitz, 8 days of bombing intended to cripple the ports either side of the river Mersey and hamper the supply lines from the West. The area was hit hard during this period with terrible loss of life and destruction.
Just before 11.pm the first set of bombs fell onto Wallasey and signalled the start of the May Blitz. Liverpool and Bootle were also targetted this night as the Luftwaffe tried to destroy the docks and bomb the people into submission............ It failed.
Cazneau street and Low Hill are hit, Garmoyle Road and Wellington Road see houses demolished. The glass roof of Lime Street Railway station is damaged, and Crawford's biscuit factory is hit causing a fire. Bad weather forces the Luftwaffe to return to its base. Nobody could have known just what the next few days would bring when the enemy came back.

This night brought to an end the May Blitz. Though the bombing would continue it would never be as ferocious as these last 8 days. Locals would describe this time as " 8 Days of Hell " Hitler moved most of his airforce to the East to concentrate on the attack on Russia, his attempt to destroy and cripple the ports either side of the river Mersey had failed. Liverpool, Bootle, Wallesey and the surrounding areas lay in ruins, but the people's spirit was unbroken. It was they who carried and and kept everything going allowing the country to keep on being supplied. Lest we ever forget their heroism and sacrifice.
