ERNEST BROWN JUNIOR INSTRUCTIONAL CENTRE " DURNING ROAD BOMBING "

The Ernest Brown Junior Instructional Centre on Durning Road in Edge Hill, was chosen as the site for a Air raid shelter during WW2. Its basement, and in paticular its Boiler room with its reinforced ceiling offered  protection to the public from the enemy bombs falling nearby.

On the evening of 28th November 1940 the warning was given, and local people started making their way towards the shelter. Men, women and children dressed warm, and mothers wrapped their babies in blankets to protect from the cold night. Two trams stopped outside the building and the passengers joined those already inside the shelter. In all over 300 people entered the basement as the bombs began to fall.

At around 1.55 am on the 29th November the school took a direct hit from a parachute mine. The building collapsed sending debris straight onto those sheltering in the basement, many people were buried alive.  The boiler burst, streaming out hot water, and burst gas pipes alighted. Anyone not killed outright now faced these horrific dangers. Up above, the building was ablaze, and rescue workers struggled to help free the survivors.

During the next two days the rescue effort went on as first the survivors, and then the bodies of the dead were brought to the surface. It became clear that retrieving all the bodies was hopeless, and the call was made to cover the area in lime and seal it over. Just as work was about to begin a fireman noticed a hand coming from the rubble, and a 12 year old girl became the last survivor to be saved. The area was then limed and sealed, thus becoming a grave to those that remained.

Police figures gave the total number of dead as 166. However it is widely believed the the figure was much bigger at around 180. Of the survivors only 30 people escaped unharmed. Many spoke of having to walk over dead bodies to escape. Many of the dead remained unidentified, and were buried together in a grave at Anfield cemetery. Winton Churchill described the bombing as " The single worst civilian incident of the war "

The tragedy left a lasting impression on the local community. The event became known as " The Durning Road Bombing " In 2001 the local church of St Cyprian and its congregation decided to erect a memorial in honour of those who died. A wonderful glass plaque containg 150 names of those who died was sited inside the church.

The church has since closed and the memorial was removed to storage at the Anglican Cathedral. Due to the work of local people the memorial has now been erected at Kensington Junior School in Brae Street, very close to where The Ernest Brown Junior Instructional Centre once stood.

Two alleged  stories have come from the tragedy,  and I have added them here as I believe people will find them of interest.

' During the rescue operation a baby girl was born. It is believed that her mother died from her injuries sustained in the bombing, and it is unknown if the baby survived or what happened to her '

' A local man who was a serving soldier was home on leave at the time of the bombing. He helped during the rescue operation, and he himself brought 3 children from the ruins. Because he had stayed to help he had outstayed his leave, and on returning to his regiment he was charged with being AWOL and served time in a military prison as a punishment. '

LIVERPOOL DAILY POST 29th NOVEMBER 2010

Linda McNeely, whose father Reginald McIver, 84, lost his mother in the bombing, said the trauma of the experience meant he had only in recent years begun to speak of the tragedy.

She added: “He used to take a flask into his mother in the shelter but on that night they wouldn’t let him in because a tram had stopped nearby and everyone piled in.

“So he said to just pass the flask in to his mother – he didn’t see her alive again.”

LIVERPOOL ECHO 25th NOVEMBER 2010

Stan Smart, 83, whose aunt, uncle and neighbour were killed in the disaster, had been in the doomed shelter only hours before the fatal raid. Nightly, he would take blankets into the Durning Road shelter in order to reserve spaces for members of his family, who would bunk down there even when there were no air raids, such was the fear.

Mr Smart, who was 12 at the time of the bombing, said: “My uncle came into our shelter looking for Mr Robinson, a neighbour. “His daughter was in the college shelter and it was such a bad night’s raid she was worried about him and wanted him to be with her. I’ll never forget watching as my uncle led him away. That was the last time we saw them.”

Mr Smart, who lives in Kensington, added the devastation had been so great that his dad and brother’s frantic searches of the temporary morgues set up to house the dead bore no fruit other than finding his uncle’s watch. He said: “Because it had been covered in boiling water from the burst pipes the leather strap just crumbled in their fingers.

“He couldn’t be identified. That was the only way we knew he had died.”
