Liverpool And Merseyside Remembered

THE CHRISTMAS BLITZ 1940

For 3 nights the area came under attack with heavy bombing causing mass destruction and loss of life. It became name as ' The Christmas Blitz'


20th DECEMBER 1940


The North Liverpool docks are the target and take heavy bombing. The Adelphi hotel has a near miss, but the Town Hall, Municipal Buildings and Cunard Offices are hit and fires start within them. The Landing Stage also takes a blow. A parachute mine lands at Waterloo Dock killing 9 people. I have found details for 8 of those who died.

died 20/12/1940, aged 54.
of 117 Bagot Street. Died at Waterloo Docks.

EDWARD BENJAMIN BAKER
died 20/12/1940, aged 34.
Firewatcher. Husband of Constance Baker, of 10 Victoria Terrace, Aigburth. Died at Waterloo Grain Warehouse.

THOMAS JOHN EVANS
died 20/12/1940, aged 55.
Son of the late William Hugh and Agnes Jane Evans, of Holyhead; husband of Lily L. Evans, of 254 Queen's Drive, West Derby. Died at Waterloo Dock.

JAMES HENRY EVANS
died 20/12/1940, aged 72.
Firewatcher; of 14 Peter Road, Walton. Husband of A. Evans. Died at Waterloo Dock.

PERCY GERRARD
died 20/12/1940, aged 46.
of 7B Broughton Drive. Husband of Ellen Gerrard. Died at Waterloo Dock.

EDWARD LINFORD
died 20/12/1940, aged 40.

HARRY WILLIAM SWINTON
died 20/12/1940, aged 17.

21st DECEMBER 1940


The heaviest raid to date hits Liverpool. Fires burn in many places causing utter chaos. Canada, Gladstone, Brocklebank, Princes, Wapping, King's and Carriers Docks all bombed. Royal Infirmary hit with damage to houses nearby. Other bombs hit St George's Hall, the Electric Station at Highfield Street, Prescot Street Police Station and the Fish Market at Hatton Garden. Several air raid shelters are hit with serious loss off life.  Most areas to the North and South of Liverpool city centre are hit as are other areas of the city on this night of destruction.

3 People are killed when a bomb hits Neville Road in Fazakerley.

died 21/12/1940, aged 27.
Son of Thomas and Emily Jinks, of 26 Drysdale Avenue, Chingford, Essex. Died at 65 Neville Road.

JOHN PARKER
died 21/12/1940, aged 7.

WILLIAM THOMAS PARKER
died 21/12/1940, aged 29.

James Ferguson Hood is believed to be the only full Time Liverpool fireman who was killed on duty by enemy action. He was killed by a collapsing wall during an air raid in Forge St/Juniper St Kirkdale on the 21 December 1940.

Fireman Hood was a Scotsman who joined Liverpool Police Fire Brigade in 1935 as number 379H and he served at Westminster Road fire station.
