9th AUGUST 1940

The first wave of bombs are dropped on Merseyside when Prenton in Birkenhead is hit.

Wallasey feels the force of the Luftwaffe.

17th AUGUST 1940

Liverpool is the target of the German bombers. Brunswick, North Coburg and South Queens Docks are hit as is Caryl street where the bomb just misses Caryl Gardens.

28th AUGUST 1940

Mossley Hill Parish church damaged. Houses destroyed at Kingsmead Drive and St. Anne's Road, Aigburth.

Mossley Hill Parish church ( the Church of St. Matthew and St. James )was hit between 23.50 p.m and 4.20 a.m. on 28th and 29th of August 1940.It is believed to be the first church that was bombed in England during WW2.

Bombing across Liverpool with little effect. Dovecot sees hits to Anderson shelters, while a unexploded bomb is reported in Hunts Cross.

The Everton area is hit. Mill Road hospital recieves slight damage.

Warehouses in Stone Street and Vandries Street are damaged. The Cleveland Square shelter recieves a direct hit with loss of life. The Customs House is set ablaze.

An air raid Shelter at Cleveland Square off Paradise street is hit. At least 16 Die in the bombing.

3rd SEPTEMBER 1940

Kensington is hit as is the Lark Lane and Ullet Road area. Aigburth Vale High School and the Rope works in Lodge Lane also fall victim to the bombs.

4th SEPTEMBER 1940

The Power Station on Lister Drive and the Goods Station at Edge Hill Railway are both targeted but unhit. The Dunlop Rubber works in Walton recieves damage as does the Tunnel Road Cinema.

5th SEPTEMBER 1940

Washington Street and St. James Road are hit. Liverpool Anglican Cathedral recieves damage from a blast. Windows  and stonework are broken.

6th SEPTEMBER 1940

The rare event of a day light bombing occurred this day. The chemical company in Norfolk Street was destroyed by fire. At the Milner Safe Works on Smithdown Lane 14 ambulances used by A.R.P wardens were damaged.

The Washington Street home of the Engineer ( George Siddall ) to the Dean of the Anglican Cathedral took a direct hit  on the night of 5th/6th September. Sadly himself, his wife and his child died. The bomb was so strong that it damaged doors and windows in the cathedral.

West Derby and Woolton are hit while Speke road has many damaged houses. 3 Unexploded bombs land near to the Anti Aircraft site on Deysbrook Lane.

11th SEPTEMBER 1940

The only reported attack was in Belle Vale Road where the damage was minor.

12th SEPTEMBER 1940

Demolition to 2 houses after Wellington Road is bombed.

14th SEPTEMBER 1940

Only one enemy plane spotted in the air above Liverpool. It caused a small amout of damage along the Docks.

15th SEPTEMBER 1940

A heavy raid brings attacks to the areas of Anfield, Fairfield, Walton, Speke and Norris Green. The Palace Ice Rink in Kensington is hit as is the Airport at Speke.

16th SEPTEMBER 1940

The Carlton Cinema on Moss Lane recieved a hit. Great Homer street suffers a lot of bomb damage, with a Fireman being killed while attending a fire at 95 Great Homer Street. His details are listed below.

17th SEPTEMBER 1940

Church Lockerby Road and Green Lane, Old Swan hit by bombing. A policeman is killed attending to damage in Currie Street off Scotland Road.

Green Lane - Prescot Rd, Old Swan, was hit killing 8 AFS Firemen - Six of them Outright. There was more men there than usual as it was the time they changed duty

Rescuers later said:

"Six men were killed outright and several others were seriously injured. Three
men who were sitting on a heavy iron form were hurled with the seat, through the roof of the building and there bodies were recovered from the back passage at the rear.

There was nothing we could do for them.

Some of them must have been struck, not only by bomb fragments, but the heavy
slabs of sandstone from which the building was made"

A motor driver worked at G. W. Ives, No 389 Prescot Rd. Served in merchant Navy 1917-1918. Joined AFS 22-7-1940.

Liverpool is hit hard this night. A Nurses in Home Fazakerley is hit as is Walton Prison were people are trapped in the debris. Railway lines at Brownlow Street and St Michael's Station are damaged.

Walton, Anfield and West Derby take blows with Hilary road in West Derby recieving serious damage to some of its houses. The Anti Aircraft site on Deysbrook Lane is evacuated due to a unexploded bomb.

21st SEPTEMBER 1940

A bomb breaks through the Underground Railway causing damage to two trains. T.J Hughes store is hit. Warehouses at the Alexandra Dock are ablaze as is the timber yard in Rimrose Road. East Lancashire road, Lowerhouse Lane, and the London Road area are hit.

23rd SEPTEMBER 1940

The North of Liverpool recieves most of the hits this night. Walton Park Cemetery Chapel is damaged along with houses on Robson Street.

24th SEPTEMBER 1940

Liverpool city centre and the docklands take the blows. Parker Street, Clayton Square, Church Street, Great Howard Street and Love Lane recieve hits. The Stanley Tobacco Warehouse, Silcocks Cattle Foodmill and a Cotton Warehouse on Glegg Street are damaged in the raid.

26th SEPTEMBER 1940

Wapping, Kings, Queens, Coburg and Brunswick Docks are hit hard with many warehouses alongside them ablaze. The Dock Board and Cunard Buildings are damaged.

27th SEPTEMBER 1940

Great Homer Street area takes hits as is the school at Banks Road in Garston.

29th/30th SEPTEMBER 1940

Everton and Aigburth are bombed this night. Grain warehouses at Dukes Dock are set ablaze. Two of the auxiliary firemen who attend the fire are killed by a falling wall. Their details are below with one listed as dying on 1st October.

Stanley Road, Great Mersey Street, Lichfield Road, Wavertree road and Grantley Road are all hit. The Welsh Chapel in Great Mersey Street is demolished by a bomb.

Everton, Knotty Ash, Anfield, Mossley Hill, and the Mill Street area are bombed. Manningham Road, Elderdale Road and Hogarth Road recieve large amounts of damage.

4 People are killed when a bomb hits Elderdale Road in Anfield.

Liverpool City centre and the North Docks come under attack. Alexandra and Langton Docks are damaged as is the Harbourmaster's house. South John Street, James Street, Redcross Street, Paradise Street, Hanover Street and South Castle Street suffer severe damage.

Heavy raid on the Docklands. Houses on Gadsby Street damaged and Myrtle Gardens Tenements are hit with loss of life.

In the early hours of the 14th two bombs hit Myrtle Gardens tenements. At least 12 people died in the attack, most of the victims are children.

Netherfield road is bombed with huge damage to houses and buildings. Many people are trapped and rescue workers franticly try to help. A air raid Wardens post is hit killing a warden and injuring another. At least 11 people lose their lives this night.

The gas works at Spofforth Road is hit during this heavy raid. Botanic Park hit by Parachute Mines one of which hits The Ernest Brown Junior Instructional Centre on Durning Road.

The Ernest Brown Junior Instructional Centre on Durning Road in Edge Hill takes a direct hit. Over 300 people are in the basement shelter when the bomb brings the building down upon them.
